Biden is failing in his most important job: picking people
The 2-year breather to halt MAGAfication of America is being squandered
Poll numbers make clear that Americans - Democrats and Independents as well as obviously Republicans - are unhappy with President Biden’s performance. Significantly, Democrats who (like me) feel an almost breathless panic about what may be a very short 2 year pause in the onward march of MAGAdom, are bitterly disappointed in how we’re blowing this glimmer of a shot at avoiding a return to a “crueler, meaner America.” And the injuries are substantially self-inflicted.
I spend most of my professional time working with entrepreneurs. It is a well-documented fact the reason most startups fail is because of people problems. These include co-founder disputes, failure to replace team members who aren’t performing and poor choices in hires in the first place. The Biden Administration is doing all of these things.
In a great opinion piece on June 1, Jennifer Rubin made the point that Merrick Garland is far too much milque toast for the moment. Instead of boldly prosecuting what for most people are obvious, blatant acts to undermine American democracy, Attorney General Garland is tip-toeing around Trump and his accomplices. Similarly, in today’s other news, Biden is “upset with staff” over his Administration’s tepid response to what is obviously the top-of-mind issue in American voters views of his Administration: how inflation is being handled. Despite substantial evidence that Fed Chair Jerome Powell has mishandled the response to inflation, Biden re-nominated him. I have previously written about the Biden Administration’s woeful record in naming US Ambassadors. Never mind that they have to be confirmed by the Senate, Biden can’t blame the Senate if he hasn’t even sent forward nominations. This Administration is the slowest on record of filling those jobs. The same pattern seems to be true throughout the Government for the roughly 10,000 jobs that are political appointments.
If the precious 2 years we have had to reverse the course of deepening American anger and frustration with government, ALL BRANCHES of government, prove to have been squandered, then it will truly, and sadly, be a confirmation of the old adage that a people get the government they deserve.
